Day Three

Tuesday, October 8, 2024

Lisa: We would have liked to spend more time at Basecamp Flint Hills, but we had miles to go before we could sleep. And we were looking forward to spending the night indoors in Miller!

Marianne: I still couldn’t believe that Lisa and I had nine full days to be together, talk about our lives, and laugh our heads off. And we were DOING this thing and it wasn’t killing us. We were having such a great time! Ever since May, 2023, when we hiked nine grueling miles on the Centerpoint Trail near Ponca, Arkansas, our motto has been “We can do hard things!”

Miller

During the planning stages of our hike, we had a tough time finding places to spend the night because of the limited mileage we could cover on foot every day. Some of the information online was outdated—one website said it offered overnight accommodations to hikers/bikers, but it turned out to be no longer true. So I started emailing churches in the the small towns along the trail, asking if we could pitch our tent on their property. One of the churches offered to let us stay inside their building: the Miller United Methodist Church. The sign below hangs inside their building in several places, and these good folks truly live by it.

Downers

Lisa:

  • The North Lyon County Museum in Admire (between Allen and Miller) was closed so we couldn’t tour it.

Marianne:

  • We saw no people in Admire. Felt a little apocalyptic!
Highlights

Lisa:

  • Visiting the tornado shelter inside the beautiful old Admire Rural High School, built in 1923
  • Someone along the way said they thought we were pushing babies in our strollers, so Marianne and I named our babies. Mine was Sebastian and hers was Aloysius, so for the rest of the hike, we kept saying, “Oh, Sebastian will love Pomona Lake!” or “Aloysius needs to stop and take a rest.”
  • Meeting Sandy (church admin), Leah (church cleaner), Cade, and Nate (Leah’s kids)
  • The refrigerator they filled for us
  • Sandy brought us two movies to watch on the big screen in their fellowship hall
  • Indoor plumbing!

Marianne:

  • Cade told us about a scavenger hunt for colored rocks with messages on them. (It’s part of the the Kindness Rocks Project.) We realized we’d seen some by a memorial bench before Admire.
  • Getting to wash up with indoor plumbing!*

*Lisa: Perhaps you noticed that Marianne straight-up copied one of my highlights. Just remember that I said it first.

Fast Facts: Miller, Kansas
  • Founded in 1910
  • Post office discontinued in 1958
  • No population data available
  • Considered part of Waterloo Township
  • At the Miller trailhead, there’s a vault toilet and picnic shelter and place to camp

Day Eight: Ottawa to Rantoul

Day Eight Sunday, October 13, 2024 Lisa: A little bit of melancholy started to descend on us as the temperature dropped and we got closer to the end of the trail. Marianne: Leaving Ottawa felt like leaving summer camp before your friends. There were still things to...

Day Seven: Pomona to Ottawa

Day Seven Saturday, October 12, 2024 Lisa: This is one stretch of the trail that isn't completely done (they're constructing a bridge—no word on when that will be completed) so there's a full-sun detour along dusty dirt roads. But arriving in beautiful Ottawa was a...

Day Six: Pomona State Park to Pomona

Day Six Friday, October 11, 2024 Lisa: An eventful day. Marianne had two flat tires thanks to tiny thorns that got embedded. We'd walked over five miles before we realized—she just thought she was overtired from the previous day's epic mileage. We had no other choice...

Day Five: Osage City to Pomona State Park

Day Five Thursday, October 10, 2024 Lisa: After a great night of sleep in a real bed in Danielle and Colton's beautiful Airbnb, we were raring to tackle our longest hiking day. (Who are we kidding? Neither of us slept for shit.) Marianne: We started out early since we...

Day Four: Miller to Osage City

Day Four Wednesday, October 9, 2024 Lisa: Our new friends at the Miller United Methodist Church got on the horn to other churches down the trail to let them know what we were doing and ask if they could help in any way. A church at our next stop, the Community...

Day Two: Bushong to Allen

Day Two Monday, October 7, 2024 Lisa: We were feeling pretty invincible after clocking 14 total miles on our first day. But we kept telling each other not to get cocky. Even so, the mere 5.8 trail miles from Bushong to Allen and Basecamp Flint Hills campground was a...

Day One: Allegawaho Park to Bushong

Day One Sunday, October 6, 2024 Marianne: After a good night's sleep, we drove to the trailhead (watch out for highway patrolman on 177—it's a speed trap!) at Allegawaho Heritage Memorial Park near Council Grove, Kansas. This is a very spiritual place, and we started...

The Night Before: Alta Vista

The Night Before Saturday, October 5, 2024 Lisa: I drove 500 miles from my house in Littleton, Colorado, to Marianne's in Overland Park, Kansas. While she attended an evening wedding, I packed up the gear in my two-door coupe. For reasons unknown even to Marianne,...
